Like any great fairy tale, the story of Central Florida begins humbly. Once upon a time, the area that has become a world-famous tourist destination was just sleepy farmland of orange groves as far as the eye can see. But in 1971, the Walt Disney Corporation opened what is regarded today as the world's most spectacular theme park - Walt Disney World, beginning Central Florida's era as "the most magical place on Earth."
Since then, America's most celebrated theme park has been visited by more than 40 million children and adults from the world over. As more and more people flocked to the area, Orlando and the surrounding cities began to flourish, and today the Orlando area is considered one of the planet's ultimate vacation destinations.
See and Do
Theme parks aren't the only reason to visit the vacation towns of Central Florida. With more than 95 tourist attractions, both large and small, Central Florida has tons to offer visitors of all ages and levels of adventurousness. Recreational activities include picnics, boating, fishing, hiking and discovering much of Florida's rich history and culture in local museums, galleries and theaters. These hidden treasures lie among the state's more than 300 lakes, springs and rivers, and are surrounded by beautiful parks, gardens, walking and hiking trails, wildlife sanctuaries, and zoos.
Climate
Temperatures range between the upper 50s in winter to the mid-to-high 90s in summer, making the days in Orlando and Kissimmee perfect for whichever activity you choose. Night time temperatures in the winter can dip into a very occasional 30s - 40s, but usually are more temperate to warm throughout the year. The wettest months are June through August, when the Gulf of Mexico stirs up the weathermaker, causing thunderstorms and slight humidity. Since 1960, only three hurricanes (Charley, Frances and Jeanne) had an impact on Central Florida, so while they are possible, hurricanes are not a common occurrence or a particular threat to this area.
Getting There
Visitors to the Orlando and Kissimmee areas of Florida fly to the Orlando International Airport, or alternatively, the Orlando Executive Airport. Both are easily accessible from the resort.
